Japanese automaker Honda Motor is considering establishing an electric vehicle production facility in Canada.
The Nikkei newspaper learned about this, Ukrinform reported.
The total cost of the project could reach 2 trillion yen ($14 billion), making it one of the largest investments by the Japanese automaker as it hopes to catch up with rivals in the United States and Europe in the electric car industry.
Honda is considering several potential cities, including a city near an existing auto plant in Ontario.
The decision is expected to be made at the end of 2024 and the new facility will be commissioned in 2028.
It is stated that Honda also plans to mass produce batteries for automobiles in the US state of Ohio starting from 2025, by partnering with LG Energy Solution from South Korea. But in Canada, Honda plans to produce the batteries on its own.
As reported by Ukrinform, Canada has released final rules stating that all passenger cars, SUVs, crossovers and light trucks sold in the country must have zero emissions by 2035.
