WordPad, the amazing text editor that’s been part of Windows for almost 30 years, is getting the boot. The latest Windows 11 Insider build (26020) no longer includes WordPad, and Microsoft plans to completely remove it from the operating system in a future update.

This change should be permanent, meaning users will not be able to reinstall the app through official channels once the stable build is released to the public.

Goodbye WordPad

The announcement was made on the Windows Insider Blog, along with several new features in the Windows 11 Insider version (26020). These include advanced voice access tools and improved voice text-to-speech. But WordPad’s removal stands out due to its long history and familiarity to many users. The blog says:

“Starting with this build, the WordPad and People apps will no longer be installed after doing a clean install of the OS. In a future flight, WordPad will be removed on upgrade. WordPad will not be reinstallable. WordPad is a deprecated Windows feature”

This isn’t a big surprise, as WordPad hasn’t been updated in years and is somewhere between a simple notepad and a full-fledged word processor. Although it is free and does not require internet access, many users have found better alternatives elsewhere.

The Contacts app is also joining WordPad on the block, and Step Tracker will no longer receive updates. Microsoft presents ClipChamp as a potential alternative to the latter.

Meanwhile, Notepad, the ever-reliable text editor, continues to change. This build adds some improvements, including voice control accessibility settings and the ability to pause and resume printing. However, some users may find it unnecessary to constantly work with Notepad.

Besides these somewhat sad farewells, the new structure brings with it many important additions. You’ll now see notifications when your computer is in sleep mode, and you can give your devices more descriptive names for easier sharing.
