As planned, the Falcon 9 first stage returned to Earth approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff and landed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida aboard the unmanned A Shortfall of Gravitas spacecraft.

According to SpaceX’s mission statement, this was the 16th launch and landing of that launch vehicle. Meanwhile, the Falcon 9 upper stage continued to carry the 23 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit, where they were scheduled to be deployed approximately 65.5 minutes after liftoff.

This was SpaceX’s third orbital launch of 2024. And there will be much more; SpaceX officials said the company plans to launch 144 missions this year, breaking its record of 98 in 2023.

More spaceflight activity will take place later in the evening (Monday morning, January 8). United Launch Alliance plans to launch its Vulcan Centaur rocket for the first time at 2:18 a.m. ET (0718 GMT) on Monday and send its private Peregrine lander to the moon.
