Microsoft confirms in the roadmap for 365 applications that Teams will roll out to Android Auto from February. The integration was announced nearly a year ago during Google I/O in May 2023 alongside the introduction of Zoom and Cisco Webex in Android Auto. The last two have been available since September, so Microsoft took its time.
Not much other information is known about how teams will present themselves on the car’s infotainment system. The details shared by Microsoft tell us that you can easily join scheduled meetings, call contacts and get an overview of your recent conversations using the calendar view. It is not yet known whether you can also see your chat conversations. Also from a road safety perspective, a limited version of teams that doesn’t distract the driver too much could be the best option.
Google also doesn’t want to promote video conferences while driving with Android Auto. You can only make audio calls and there is always a simplified interface for the car’s infotainment system. Calls are made via a classic API, such as normal phone calls via a smartphone or communication apps like WhatsApp. Entertainment applications such as YouTube and games are only available when the car is parked.
Android Auto is a platform that allows you to connect your Android smartphone to your car’s infotainment system and stream content to it. Many car manufacturers are going one step further and completely replacing their own software with Google’s Android Automotive. Microsoft Teams has been available since 2021 on its iOS counterpart Apple Carplay, which also does the same for the iPhone.
