American semiconductor manufacturer Nvidia is preparing to start mass production of artificial intelligence chips specifically for China in the second quarter of 2024.
This was reported by Reuters, as reported by Ukrinform.
The H20 chip is said to be the most powerful of three China-focused chips developed by Nvidia to comply with export restrictions the US announced in October.
The semiconductor was originally planned to be released last November, but that plan was postponed. Sources told Reuters that the delay was due to problems server makers had integrating the chip.
Initial production will be limited and Nvidia will mostly fill orders from large customers, one person said.
Nvidia declined to comment.
Reuters had previously reported, citing sources, that Chinese companies were reluctant to buy the H20 chip and were testing domestic alternatives due to fears that the United States could tighten export restrictions again.
As reported by Ukrinform, the US has systemic export restrictions against China; These include restricting the supply of modern technology to China, including artificial intelligence technologies. Many countries are currently trying to adapt artificial intelligence for military purposes.
