Apple’s long-awaited VR headset will be available to the general public in February, although the initial launch of the Apple Vision Pro will be limited to the US.

As expected, Apple will launch its Apple Vision Pro glasses in February. American Apple fans will be able to purchase the device on February 19th. Apple announced its VR glasses in the middle of last year. The Apple Vision Pro is a VR headset equipped with high-resolution cameras that enable an AR experience. This allows you to experience a completely different world or see intelligent digital additions to your environment.

This environment partially sees what you are doing, thanks to an OLED screen that shows what type of application you are in. Taking a break from the AR/VR experience? Apple then projects a shot of your eyes onto the outside of the glasses. The Apple Vision Pro VR glasses run on the Vision OS developed by Apple. The device’s own M2 chip powers the device, along with a special R1 chip that Apple developed for the occasion. Each eye gets a 4K resolution screen, which is slightly more than what advanced VR glasses like the Meta Quest 3 offer today.

Expensive ski goggles

The digital ski goggles will cost a small fortune at $3,499. Americans can order the expensive glasses starting January 19th. For comparison: The Meta Quest 3 costs 549.99 euros. The question is whether Tim Cook’s Apple can do with VR glasses what it previously did with tablets, smartphones and smartwatches. None of these product categories were new when Apple introduced its entry, but each time the company managed to define the product category and launch it well.

Apple faces the same challenge with VR. VR is niche and has been described by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as his fever dream with somewhat distorted versions of a metaverse. The whole Metaverse hype was almost immediately quashed by the much more tangible and practical AI revolution. Will the Apple Vision Pro come after Easter or will Apple finally introduce the VR/AR glasses to the general public on February 19th? In any case, the price is high and the glasses would initially only be available in limited quantities.
