HP is the latest in the line of laptop makers to announce AI laptops for 2024. AI as it is: a new Intel Core Ultra chip on board that can deliver a few smart functions a little faster.
For now, HP is limiting its announcement to a laptop with the new Intel chips: HP Specter x360. This laptop is available in two screen sizes, 14 inches and 16 inches, with an Intel Core Ultra 7 or Ultra 5 on board.
If you want a little more GPU power, you should choose the 16-inch version. Only there can you optionally configure an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050. Other models have the integrated Intel Arc graphics card.
Additionally, each model can come with up to 32GB of RAM, 2TB of SSD storage, and a WiFi 7 chip for the top models. In order to use WiFi 7, Windows 11 must first allow it. Wifi 7 will not work on these laptops until the Windows 11 24H1 update in April.
The connectivity is limited to the essentials: 2x USB-C (Thunderbolt 4), 1x USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and a headphone jack.
In the HP Specter x360, the brand is also presenting a 9-megapixel webcam for the first time. That’s more than enough for 4K resolution, but HP uses the extra megapixels to always put you in the center of the image (digital zoom) without sacrificing quality.
According to the manufacturer, the 9 MP sensor is supported by a special “AI chip” that takes over the entire computing power of the camera. This is an energy efficient way for the camera to keep an eye on things like when you’re sitting in front of the camera to wake up the laptop or put it to sleep. If someone is looking over your shoulder, you will receive a notification.
Particularly practical: If you look away for a moment, the notebook dynamically reduces the refresh rate to save energy and the screen becomes darker. The camera is Windows Hello compatible, so you can log in using facial recognition.
The HP Specter x360 is the first laptop with integrated Poly Studio audio tuning. According to the manufacturer, this would provide better sound for both multimedia and video calls.
Both the 14-inch model and the 16-inch variant have an OLED option with the same resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels. The panels support a variable refresh rate from 48 to 120 Hz and are touch sensitive. The 16-inch version is also available in a cheaper IPS LCD version (2,560 x 1,600 pixels, 48-120 Hz), also with touch function.
According to the manufacturer, the HP Specter x360 14 inch lasts up to 13 hours of light office work or 19 hours of full HD videos. The 16-inch version lasts up to 18.5 hours of Full HD video with an IPS LCD screen and 45 minutes less with the OLED version.
Both laptops are now available in the US. The HP Specter x360 14 inch is available from 1,370 euros plus VAT. The larger HP Specter x360 16 inch is available from 1,462 euros plus VAT. When both screen sizes will come to Europe and what the prices will be there is currently unclear.
