The State Service for the Protection of Special Communications and Information of Ukraine warns about malware-containing messages sent by hackers to soldiers of the Armed Forces under the guise of recruitment for the 3rd OSHBr and the IDF.

It was noted that the computer emergency response team of the Ukrainian CERT-UA government, operating under the State Special Communications Service, took precautions against a series of cyber attacks in which criminals sent messages containing malware regarding the recruitment of personnel to the Armed Forces. Separate assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at the Signal envoy of Ukraine.

Suspicious activity was detected by experts from the American-Japanese company Trendmicro at the end of December 2023, CERT-UA reported. The attackers’ messages contain archive files, the contents of which can infect the computer with the REMCOSRAT and REVERSESSH malware. Attackers are also trying to make the names and contents of the archives interesting for the military – “research of the prisoner”, “geolocation”, “coding commands”, “call signs”, etc.

CERT-UA adds that despite the use of publicly available tools (which may lead to identification of similarities with other attacks), the described activity is a distinct set of cyber threats based on other specific characteristics and is tracked by the UAC- identifier. 0184.

As reported, from January 2022 to September 2023, the government’s computer emergency response team, CERT-UA, recorded almost four thousand cyber incidents in Ukraine.
