Intel launches its fourteenth generation of desktop processors. Architecturally, these do not differ from the thirteenth generation, but the manufacturer has provided a slightly higher clock speed and more cores than last year.

The fourteenth generation of Core i desktop chips is not that technically spectacular. After all, Intel changes little to nothing behind the scenes. The chips are still based on the Raptor Lake architecture, which in turn is not such a big development on Alder Lake at the end of 2021. They also run off the same Intel 7 (10 nm) production line. With Meteor Lake and Intel 4, Intel has more modern tools, but these are initially only intended for the Core Ultra laptop chips.

Intel is launching six new Core i chips and a lightweight dual-core CPU:

Stronger

Of course, these chips are not exact copies of their predecessors. Intel is tinkering with the line-up on the sidelines and, above all, is giving you more computing cores and a higher clock speed than last year. For example, the Intel Core i7-13700 had sixteen cores (eight P-cores and the same number of E-cores), but with the Intel Core i7-14700 you get twelve E-cores (also with eight P-cores), good for overall twenty computing cores.

All chips also have two memory channels and space for sixteen PCIe 5.0 lanes. You also get four PCIe 4.0 lanes. Thunderbolt 5 is also present. Intel claims an increase in performance compared to the previous generation and that’s true, but especially because there are now slightly better equipped chips under the same name. Most new chips have integrated graphics capabilities, but Meteor Lake’s Arc GPUs don’t yet.

Intel also offers “F” variants of the CPUs without integrated graphics components and “T” variants for more compact systems with difficult cooling.
