Amazon today announced Matter Casting at CES 2024, a compatible competitor to Apple’s AirPlay feature. Matter Casting will initially only support streaming content from the Amazon Prime Video app on Echo Show devices, but the feature will support Fire TV in the coming months. Towards the end of this year, Plex will also work on a number of other video services, including Starz, Pluto TV, Sling TV and ZDF.
AirPlay allows Apple device users to wirelessly stream video from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or another Mac, and audio from nearly any Apple device to any HomePod, “Apple TV,” or compatible third-party speaker. allows streaming. Google has a similar equivalent for Chromecast devices called Google Cast. Since both AirPlay and Google Cast are proprietary technologies, Amazon’s new feature is designed to be cross-platform.
Apple and Google are working with Amazon on the Matter home standard, but they have yet to announce plans to support Matter Casting and may stay away. With all this said, it’s clear that Amazon is committed to making video streaming apps and TV accessories work together, regardless of their platform.
