The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid that Lenovo unveiled at CES is a unique device because, as we say in the title, it can work as a Windows laptop and as an Android tablet.

This isn’t the first time Lenovo has attempted something like this, and some may remember the IdeaPad U1 from 2011, which similarly combined Windows and Android in a single device, or Samsung’s Ativ Q from 2013, which only allowed you to switch between Windows and Android with the push of a button. In any case, it is an innovative concept that we know will not attract too many consumers (due to its high price), but we highlight it as a unique and innovative product that is always worth thanking among so many similar designs.

Like the IdeaPad U1 we mentioned, the idea is clear and part of two different pieces. The screen and the base it connects to. We have a Windows 11 laptop attached. When we separate it from the base, we have an Android electronic tablet.

It must be said that this hybrid has dual internal hardware. On the one hand a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 from Qualcomm on the tablet and on the other a Intel Core Ultra 7 the latest generation in the base, which includes a magnetic connection system, keyboard, touchpad and the rest of the notebook’s hardware components, up to 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and an SSD with a capacity of 1 Tbyte.

Of course, it has a double battery38 Wh on the tablet and 75 Wh on the base, and Lenovo even lists additional uses for even more versatility, as the base, which the firm calls the “Hybrid Station,” can be used with another external monitor while you’re using the tablet on its own.

It must be said that the screen is of high quality, and 14-inch multi-touch OLED with a native resolution of 2.8K. Both parts support Wi-FI 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The keyboard has a fingerprint reader, two USB Type-C ports and an audio jack, while the tablet has a USB-C port for charging and data.

Lenovo has set the selling price $1,999 for this ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid. It’s going to be a tough sell at this price, no doubt about that, but we have to thank companies that take risks with devices other than the generic lineup. It will be available in the second quarter with Windows 11 and Android 13.
