The Chinese space agency said on Wednesday that its latest lunar probe had arrived at the launch site in preparation for a mission to the moon in the first half of this year. State broadcaster CCTV posted on its website secret photos of the device being unloaded from a large cargo plane earlier this week and then transported by flatbed truck to the Wenchang launch pad on China’s southern Hainan island.
The announcement came a day after the US company abandoned its planned lunar landing on February 23 due to a fuel leak that began shortly after Monday’s liftoff. China and the USA are planning to send astronauts to the moon due to the growing competition in space. The US plans to do this in 2026 and China in 2030.
The China National Space Administration announced that pre-launch tests will be conducted on the Chang’e-6 probe. Mission goals include returning samples from the far side of the Moon. Another US lunar lander is scheduled to be launched next month by a Houston-based company.
