Xiaomi has probably taken the most important step in its history. The company was already involved in all kinds of ecosystems related to smart devices. From the birth of mobile phones to the entire world of home automation, the kitchen, lighting, television repertoire… but now has already found a revolutionary new vehicle: electric cars.

The end of 2023, which has been awaited for months based on rumors and leaks everywhere, has introduced us to the new Xiaomi SU7, the first electric vehicle from a company that plans to launch many more in the future. Some are in the high range, others are on cheaper lines. And the arrival of this new car, its design and features, It made me rethink my future as a vehicle owner.. Maybe it’s time to turn the wheel and change plans.

I was heading towards hydrogen and now I’m not so clear

For unrelated reasons, I bought my last vehicle in 2016.. We buy it, it is the vehicle of the house. Before there were two, now there is one and there is a motorcycle that takes up a little less space. This is what it’s like to work from home, which requires you to travel much less than when you’re in the office and has more flexible schedules that don’t leave you tied to two tools working at the same time.

It was 2016 and we bought a diesel vehicle.. Electric ones were already starting to appear more frequently and they didn’t convince me much. Not because of the price, which remains an obstacle despite the increase in other engines, but in terms of performance. So much so that I made it clear that if I bought an electric car, it would be a car produced by Tesla. However, the situation was not very clear.

Even today I am still reluctant to buy an electric vehicle and in the past I was convinced that my next vehicle would be neither diesel nor petrol and that I would eventually move into the world of hydrogen vehicles. They told me about it at the time The wonders of fuel cell vehicles. It’s still green and there are a lot of issues to solve for the future, but it was something that was in my plans. With a 7 year old diesel parked at home, hoping it would last another 7 years without very expensive repairs didn’t seem like a utopia. And it still doesn’t feel like that to me.

However, Xiaomi has showcased an electric car that I would consider buying sooner, despite rumors that the Xiaomi SU7 will not be exactly economical. If we take into account that it is compared to the BMW 5 Series and that its starting price is around 60,000 euros, It makes sense that Xiaomi SU7 is not cheap. However, since there is no official statement from the Chinese company, these are all assumptions.

I like almost everything about the Xiaomi SU7, we’ll see if I like the price too

Xiaomi's car

Thanks to Xiaomi SU7, I think I will buy an electric car without much thought, even replacing the idea that if I make this decision, I will turn to Tesla. Although I do not like the design of Xiaomi SU7 Proposal to launch in sedan format conflicts with my current SUV, but also everything it includes at the software and equipment level. As a Xiaomi fan, the thing that caught my attention the most was HyperOS, but the whole package really caught my attention.

Xiaomi says the Xiaomi SU7’s motor (there is a dual-motor Max model) delivers more power than equivalents from Tesla and Porsche. A plus point because having more power can get you out of trouble in case of an accident. It’s not for nothing that the company’s first HyperEngine V6 engine is capable of delivering power equivalent to 295 HP. Things look even better for the future because Xiaomi is talking about engines revving up to 35,000 rpm when the HyperEngine V8s arrive.

All this is packaged in a truly lightweight car that doesn’t reach 2,000 pounds, compared to the 2,265-pound Tesla (Model S Plaid) or the Porsche with its 2,370-pound Taycan Turbo S. Less weight, more autonomy with the same load. But as I said, it’s not all about the look I like or the engine I like. Xiaomi SU7’s technological hardware surprised me tooIt offers LiDAR sensor, high-resolution cameras and proximity sensors supported by Nvidia and Qualcomm technology.

And autonomous driving thanks to constantly learning artificial intelligence. And the new HyperOS allows any Xiaomi mobile phone, tablet or watch to be perfectly integrated into the operation of the vehicle. Because be careful, there is also a 16.1-inch 3K resolution screen for infotainment purposes here. And if you want to turn on the Xiaomi cleaning robot from your car, you turn it on. Everything is fine here.

So I had more or less planned out the roadmap for buying my car, calculating that the death of the diesel engine would coincide with the maturity of the fuel cell vehicle market, and the Xiaomi SU7 burst in to make me change my mind. Or at least make me doubt it pretty seriously. Xiaomi says it wants to be one of the top 5 vehicle manufacturers in the world in about 15 years. Maybe it will be the brand that makes me buy my first electric car.
