The National Police and the Armed Forces continue to work together to release all staff from the penitentiary centres.

The arrests came as authorities carried out operations at a Guayaquil prison in search of Jose Adolfo Macias “Fito”leader of Los Choneros, considered one of the most dangerous criminal gangs in the country due to alleged links to Mexican cartels, and who apparently escaped over the weekend.

President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboasaid that on Sunday they entered the prison, where “Fito” was supposed to transfer him to a maximum security prison, and “at that moment we established that the guy was not there, the guy had left.”

SNAI reports state that “Fito” was in prison on Saturday evening when roll call was taken, the Ecuadorian president said.

According to Noboa, “under the last two governments” the prisoner “went in and out, like Pedro, through his house in the prison,” he added in an interview this Wednesday.

The moment he learns through a leak that we are going to move the heads of the non-maximum security prisons and put them in isolated places, the guy leaves.

Noboa assured that, together with the Armed Forces, they are doing “everything possible to immediately return the hostages.”

Earlier this week, videos circulated on social media showing men dressed as prison agents reading messages from prisoners asking President Noboa to end prison controls, some of whom were subsequently executed.
