The arrival of Hunter Biden with his lawyers, accompanied by police and surrounded by cameras, caused a great stir among the spectators.
“You are the embodiment of white privilege: you sit on the Oversight Committee, spit in our faces, and ignore Congress’ subpoena for removal.
“What are you afraid of? You have no balls. I believe that Hunter Biden should be arrested here and now and put in prison,” Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace told Biden’s son.
Hunter Biden listened to Democrats and Republicans speak for just over 20 minutes before leaving the hearing well before lawmakers were set to vote on the contempt resolution.
“Sorry, Hunter, you seem afraid of what I have to say,” far-right Marjorie Taylor Greene told him during the speech, and Biden left the audience without making a statement.
Hunter Biden is being investigated by the House Republican majority as part of an impeachment investigation launched against his father on charges of… trading in influence in favor of relatives doing business abroad.
Biden’s son was called to testify behind closed doors on Dec. 13, but instead of appearing before the committee, he only gave a statement to reporters at the foot of the Capitol.
“I am here to ensure that the committee’s unlawful investigation into my family does not continue with distortions, manipulation of evidence and lies,” Hunter Biden said, believing he is the victim of a right-wing campaign against him that has damaged his image and his family.
Defying the subpoena, Republicans convened a hearing this Wednesday to approve a contempt of Congress resolution, beginning the process of criminally convicting him.
Republicans say Biden’s family, especially his son Hunter, received more than $15 million from foreign companies and the governments of Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania and China between 2014 and 2019. His partners would receive another $9 million.
In parallel with his problems in Congress, Biden’s controversial son has two open criminal cases: one for tax fraud and the other for illegal arms purchases. (EFE)
