SmartSens, a Chinese CMOS manufacturer, introduced its latest smartphone image sensor, the SC580XS, which features many significant improvements over its predecessor, the SC550XS. This compact 1/1.28-inch sensor offers advanced features and capabilities, making SmartSens competitive in the smartphone image sensor market alongside major players such as Sony, Samsung, and OmniVision.
Key features of SmartSens SC580XS:
The SC580XS stands out with its 50-megapixel resolution and 1/1.28-inch optical format, which is a step ahead of the previous model’s 1/1.56-inch SC550XS. It uses the same 22nm HKMG Stack process but includes several significant improvements. The pixel size of the sensor is 1.22 µm, but in 4-in-1 mode it actually expands to 2.44 µm, which is key to high-quality video recording. This feature allows the SC580XS to support 4K video at an impressive 120fps, making it ideal for advanced smartphone camera applications.
The SC580XS achieves a read noise level as low as 0.7e- which, when combined with Correlated Multi-Sampling technology, provides a significant noise reduction of up to 40%. This provides sharper images, especially in low light conditions. Compared to similar sensors in the industry, the SC580XS provides significant reductions in both readout noise and fixed pattern noise.
The image sensor also stands out with PixGain HDR technology, which significantly increases the dynamic range to 120dB. This feature reduces motion artifacts, ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects. The sensor also supports multiple HDR modes, including Triple Exposure HDR and PixGain HDR+VS, which further improves image quality in various lighting conditions.

Whether you’re capturing a fleeting moment or taking a group selfie, fast and accurate autofocus is essential. The sensor offers advanced focusing capabilities thanks to AllPix ADAF and Sparse PDAF technologies, ensuring fast and accurate focusing in various lighting conditions. In addition, the sensor also offers an energy efficiency advantage thanks to its advanced reading circuit and 22nm HKMG process, which allows you to use the smartphone for a long time without excessive battery consumption.
SmartSens announced that the SC580XS is currently available for sampling and is expected to begin mass production in the first quarter of 2024.
