The global PC market has shrunk again. IDC assumes that the bottom has now been reached and that sales will pick up again in the coming quarters.
The PC market shrank again in the final quarter of 2023. IDC sees a decline in sales of 2.7 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The decline is good for the market shares of the largest players, while the smaller ones lose the most.
Lenovo is the absolute champion, shipping 16.1 million PCs last quarter. That’s even more than a year ago (15.5 million). Despite the global decline, Lenovo continues to grow, reaching a market share of 24 percent compared to 22.5 percent.
The eternal rival HP is doing a little worse, but its sales and market shares are also increasing slightly. In the fourth quarter, HP shipped 13.9 million computers, up from 13.2 million a year ago. The manufacturer has a market share of 20.8 percent, compared to 19.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Lenovo and HP are the only producers. Dell is in third place and losing market share. The manufacturer delivered 9.9 million devices, around 900,000 fewer than in the previous year. Apple and Asus are also recording declines in sales. The share of all other parties combined is also shrinking.
IDC notes that the PC market has been collapsing for eight quarters in a row. Since the end of 2006, so few computers have not been sold.
If we look at the market on an annual basis, we see that all sellers have to make concessions. For the full year 2023, Lenovo is still the largest with a share of 22.7 percent, followed by HP with 20.4 percent. Lenovo will remain roughly at the status quo until 2022, while HP will grow slightly at the expense of number three Dell. Dell Technologies has a market share of 15.4 percent.
IDC believes the PC market has hit a temporary low. Analysts see further signs of growth for 2024. Computers purchased during the pandemic and before will need to be replaced gradually.
