A medieval burial of a very tall man has been found in Halmstad, Sweden. All things considered, he reached 1.9 meters in his lifetime. This surprised archaeologists because the average height of men in Sweden at the beginning of the 16th century was 1.65 metres.
The discovery was made during excavations of the “Little Square” (Lilla Torg) in the center of the city, which was once home to the Franciscan monastery built in 1494.

In the tomb was a huge sword, the length of which was 1.3 meters, which was almost two-thirds of the height of the buried person. It belongs to the group of one and a half handed swords. They were used primarily with two hands, but the weight also allowed for one-handed grip.
Archaeologists say the weapon was well preserved despite being made of iron, which is prone to rust. However, the blade near the handle is slightly damaged.

The sword was the only funeral instrument found among the 49 graves in the area. This may indicate that the buried person belonged to a noble family.
“We assume that the man belonged to the upper nobility and may have owned real estate in both Sweden and Denmark. Such people were very powerful.” – said the head of the excavation, Johan Klange.
Scientists are waiting to find out his identity with the help of DNA analysis. The exam is planned to be held in the near future. Source
