Are you one of those who use Windows Notepad to write texts? It will be easier soon and Microsoft is working on the integration artificial intelligence in Notepad, in the form of an assistant precisely named… Copilot? Almost: Cowriter is called an invention, although the truth is that it is nothing new by itself.

Various enthusiastic users who share their knowledge began hunting for the novelty by X (Twitter) and other social networks, noting that this is software in development, the final release date of which is not entirely clear. Anyway, even if it is a leak, it is based on the application files themselves, so it is a fact that it is being worked on and not only that, since everything is so advanced that an update could be made before long.

Does Cowriter come out of nowhere? As we say, no, no user Microsoft Edge and Bing Chat You will be familiar with what is already seen in the images that are shared from previous versions of the notebook. Currently listed options include:

  • Overwrite
  • Shorten
  • Magnify
  • Change the tone
  • Change the format

As you can see in the picture below these clues, no other clues are given, although some options are self-explanatory (translations of terms are not official, of course): rewrite the text, shorten or lengthen it; change the tone or choose a “professional, informal, informative, fun” etc. writing tone; or change the format, meaning the resulting text will adapt to things like “paragraph, email, list of ideas, blog post”…

All mentions of properties are relative to what you can find it in the Bing Chat compose function in Microsoft Edge. Be careful: we’re talking about Bing Chat as a reference because it’s convenient to make it Copilot, the universal AI-based copilot that Microsoft integrates into virtually all of its products… Or at least all that enable it. That’s why it’s no wonder they called him Cowriter.

However, what is shown now has room for significant improvements, given that the options listed are focused on editing existing text and not creating it from scratch, as can be done with Copilot chat or Bing (using the app’s web and search engines it doesn’t change and when chatting with Copilot it identifies itself as Bing).

There is no doubt that Windows Notepad, one of the most popular basic applications in the desktop environment, has evolved little during its history, although it is a plain text editor, and it was not expected. Perhaps his leap into Windows was one of his most notable moments, but it will remain an anecdote with what is to come. Artificial intelligence is here to stay and Windows is trying to be the maximum representative of this phenomenon.

to top it all off if you were more into WordPad than Notepad… Get used to the idea that it is time for a change.
