Scuba diving instructor Frida Yolotzin managed to capture fascinating shots while diving off the coast of Cozumel Island, Mexico.

While diving, Yolotsyn was lucky enough to spot a juvenile tripod fish (Bathypteois grallator). At first the diver did not understand what kind of creature was in front of him, but later the identity of the fish was determined.

Yolotsin also identified the fish as the larva of the rainbow tripod. Adult tripod fish (also known as spiderfish)Bathypterois species) are among the deepest fish in the world, living in waters 1 to 6 kilometers (0.6–4 mi) deep. According to the Australian Museum, the tripod fish’s name comes from the very long ventral and caudal fin rays they use to support themselves on the ocean floor, which can be up to one meter (3 feet) long.

The tripod helps fish “stand” above the seafloor and wait for prey (usually small shrimp and crustaceans) to pass by and into their waiting mouths. Tripod fish are often blind or eyeless and have little need to detect light in the dark depths of the ocean. Instead, Beck Crew writes for Australian Geographic; They feel the vibration of movement through these long fins and help them hunt.

Representatives of this species are one of the deepest water fish in the world. They live at depths of up to six kilometers.
