Micron is the first to introduce LPCAMM2 memory tailored for laptops. This memory replaces the well-known SODIMM slats and brings many advantages.

The storage specialist Micron is the first to arrive Connected memory modules with low performance compression (LPCAMM2) loose on the market. LPCAMM2 is a new form factor for laptop memory that will replace the SODIMMs of 1997. LPCAMM2 contains LPDDR5X DRAM, but the performance is not identical to this type of DRAMM on a classic DIMM. The new form factor gives RAM storage a huge boost in all areas.

Micron itself states that the module only uses 61 percent of the power and performs 71 percent better. In addition, the memory takes up 64 percent less space. Micron reports speeds of 9600 Mbit/s for LPDDR5X memory over LPCAMM2, while that’s just 5600 Mbit/s for DDR5 SODIMMs.

Modular

You screw LPCAMM2 to the motherboard with three screws that clamp the memory to contact points. Although the form factor is completely different from the familiar RAM slats, the memory remains modular and replaceable.

JEDEC, which is responsible for storage standards, announced the CAMM2 standard last year. It is based on Dell’s previous work. The technology is not owned by Micron, but the manufacturer is the first to bring its offering to market. Now it’s up to the manufacturers to use the memory. Lenovo is reportedly planning to release devices replacing SODIMM with LPCAMM2 in the future. Given the advantages of the module, there is a good chance that we will find it in more and more laptops in the coming years.
