“Due to a component shortage, we had to suspend automobile production at Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg from January 29 to February 11, except for a few units,” the company said in a statement.
Tesla attributed the lack of parts to the rerouting of the ships due to attacks by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthis against ships in the Red Sea.
The American automaker said, “Armed conflicts in the Red Sea and the resulting changes in the transportation routes between Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope also affect production in Grünheide.”
Tesla is said to be the first company to announce that it will stop production due to disruption in the supply chain. But Chinese carmaker Geely and Swedish furniture company Ikea have also warned of delivery delays.
On January 10, Yemeni Houthi militia reportedly said they would attack all ships bound for Israel, regardless of flag, and warned international shipping companies not to visit Israeli ports.
