There are indications that Google may bring widgets back to the lock screen with the yet-to-be-released Android 15 update. Android expert Mishaal Rahman noticed this in a code of Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3. How this will be designed and whether it will actually take place is still unclear. Google has not yet confirmed the arrival of the widgets and the first test version of Android 15 has yet to be released.
Widgets are one of the best features of the operating system and have been around for several years. You can easily personalize your Android home screen and read relevant information or access your favorite apps at a glance. For example, if you are a music fan, you can add Spotify as a widget or a weather application for weather enthusiasts. Now users must first unlock their screen before they can use these quick functions.
Anyone from the time when Android allowed widgets to be placed on the lock screen knows how useful they are. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean supported these lock screen widgets back then, but Android 5.0 Lollipop thought differently. As of this release, the feature is no longer available on the lock screen. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. The code contains hints that Android 15 may bring these widgets back to the lock screen.
Android expert Mishaal Rahman has revealed two ways to bring the widgets back to the home screen. The first is based on a Common roomwhere you can access this area by simply swiping on the screen, the other by simply swiping At a glance‘ widget. Currently there is only evidence that only tablets support this.
