In the new Windows 11 build, Microsoft is testing a function that automatically activates Copilot, initially only on devices with a large screen.
“We are testing with some Windows insiders in the Dev Channel how Copilot opens automatically when Windows starts on widescreen devices,” writes Microsoft in the preview of the latest Windows 11 build. For some users, Copilot opens automatically. What Microsoft means by “widescreen” is not clear.
The settings menu can be found below personal settings An additional menu is added for settings related to Windows Copilot. You can use a slider to determine whether Copilot should open automatically when Windows starts or not. Whether the feature will be on or off by default remains to be seen. This will first be tested with the Windows Insider audience to gather feedback. Microsoft then decides if, when and how to add it to a Windows update.

The nature of the animal
Microsoft wants to make its Copilot available to as many users as possible this year. The addition of a Copilot keyboard shortcut to the keyboard of new laptops could be described as rather subtle, but with this adjustment Microsoft seems to be applying its tried and tested functionality recipe to you without being asked. This has been tried for years with Edge and Bing and now again with Copilot. For those who want to use Copilot, it may be useful that the AI tool opens automatically. For those who don’t want that, it’s another setting to find and adjust.
PC manufacturers are happy to follow Microsoft into the AI madness. The term “AI PC” sounds like a nice marketing term to boost PC sales after a difficult few years. In this article, we’ll go into more detail about why it’s mostly hot air.
Another possible addition to Copilot is further customization options within Windows. Referred to as X user Albacore noticed an unannounced option to choose a chat provider in the Windows build, which could indicate that Microsoft wants to give third parties access to Copilot. This hasn’t been confirmed by Microsoft yet, nor has the addition of a “Cowriter” feature in Notepad, which we reported on earlier today.
