Zoo staff told local media that the bear appeared “relaxed” despite the 690-mile journey and was enjoying his favorite food, cucumbers, shortly after arriving. However, you will be monitored closely for any problems such aspost-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) after being in a combat zone.
Yampol ended up with concussion after a Russian attack in his hometown, when he was found in Ukraine in October 2022. Most of the zoo’s remaining 200 animals died during the fighting in the area.
He was transported through Poland to the Natuurhulpcentrum animal shelter in Belgium, but now has a permanent home in West Calder, Scotland.
Adam Welsh, the zoo’s head of education, told local media that “Yampol has been through a lot. “He’s been through some really terrible things.”

Yampol will remain in a temporary enclosure while staff monitor him to see if he enters a hibernation-like state during the winter.
The zoo is fundraising to cover the £200,000 cost of building Yampel’s new enclosure and has raised around £60,000 so far.
