“This is a major achievement made possible only by the hard work and creativity of NASA and the entire X-59 team. In just a few years, we have gone from an ambitious concept to reality. will bring it closer,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy.

The X-59 is said to be at the center of NASA’s Quest mission, which focuses on transmitting data to help regulators review rules banning commercial supersonic flights from the ground.

For the last 50 years, the United States and other countries have banned such flights because of the loud noise that frightens people.

The X-59 is expected to fly at 1.4 times the speed of sound (1489 km per hour).

“Its design, shape and technology will enable it to reach these speeds while producing quieter sounds,” NASA said.

The Quest team’s next step will be to prepare for the X-59’s first flight.

After completing flight tests, NASA plans to fly over a few select U.S. cities to collect information about the sound the X-59 makes and how people perceive it.

NASA will submit this data to the US Federal Aviation Administration and international regulators.

The single-seat plane is 30.4 meters long and 9 meters wide.

As Ukrinform reports, the US Air Force and several venture capital firms are investing $60 million in the Hermeus Corporation project, which seeks to develop the world’s first reusable hypersonic aircraft.
