MEGA adds VPN at no additional cost to paying users

After almost a year without any relevant news from MEGA, “The Privacy Company”, the company now announces one that will be of interest to all its paying users, as it comes at no additional cost and is only a preview of what is to come: a VPN with a secure connection and assumes with – or rather expected – privacy on the Internet.

The last time we talked about MEGA was almost exactly a year ago, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of its founding cloud file storage service with extreme encryption, which boasted at the time that it had amassed more than 270 million users worldwide, and also took the opportunity to preview some of the news that was going on. It remains to be seen how many of those millions of users have a payment plan, as only they will be able to take advantage of what’s coming now.

MEGA in the style of Google One will expand its offer by a free VPN… or rather it bears repeating, at no additional cost, as only users on their Pro plans will have access to it. A VPN, in case anyone doesn’t already know what it is, is an application that encrypts outgoing traffic from a device, also provides a different IP, and subsequently improves privacy and security when connected to the Internet.

In addition, the VPN also allows you to bypass geo-restrictions, but this does not seem to be one of MEGA VPN’s strong points, and that, at least in this first phase, the number of available locations is higher. only 11, including countries in North America, Europe, Asia and New Zealand. More locations will be added later.

The availability of connection points is not the only important limitation of MEGA VPN at the moment, because only the Android application is already ready (you have it in the Google Play Store). Likewise, they assure that iOS and PC applications, including Windows, macOS and Linux, will be launched in the first half of 2024.

Otherwise, MEGA describes its VPN as high speed, security and privacy: based on the WireGuard protocol and the ChaCha20 encryption system, it allows the connection of up to five devices at the same time. More information on the product page. There you will find a link to the MEGA payment plans, where – it must be said – some cheat with price comparisons when they shouldn’t because they are quite tight.
