Guatemala’s Constitutional Court ultimately did not grant temporary protection to President-elect Bernardo Arevalo’s Semilla movement, so its 23 deputies will have to take up their positions as independents.
Moreover, they will not be eligible to be elected to the Board of Directors of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, which will be created this Sunday after the inauguration of its 160 members.
The ceremonial meeting for the creation of the unicameral Congress of Guatemala began this Sunday with the main purpose of electing the Board of Directors. However, the meeting was suspended until the decision of the Constitutional Court.
The Semillha Movement was negotiating with other formations about the composition of the Board of Directors, and there were even suggestions of an agreement in which the deputies of Arevalo’s party would agree on up to 90 votes in favor of their proposal.
