This Sunday, at 07:57, another volcanic eruption began north of the town of Grindavik in Iceland.
This is the second eruption in the area since December 2023 and the fifth since 2021, the government said in a statement.
The town of Grindavik had already been evacuated early in the morning as a precaution. The eruption is not expected to affect additional populated areas.
The area is closed to traffic while first responders and scientists assess the situation.
The government has asked the public to stay away from the area for their own safety.
There are no disruptions to flights to and from Iceland, and international flight corridors remain open.
User X captured the eruption from a commercial aircraft (see video).
According to the official report, this eruption is classified as fissure eruption (often called the Icelandic type), which usually does not cause large explosions or significant production of ash dispersed into the stratosphere.
