Oppo launches the Oppo A79 5G. This device ignores fast charging but has the necessary AI features and a clear screen.

Oppo introduces the Oppo A79 5G. This is a mid-range smartphone with a recommended retail price of 299 euros (including VAT) at the start of sales. The device has a 6.72-inch screen with a so-called sunlightDisplay where the maximum brightness of 680 nits should be enough to read clear text even in sunlight.

Oppo relies on a slim design with a weight of 193 grams and a thickness of 7.99 mm. Some original variations of purple and green should make for an attractive device, but you can also opt for a more sober black.

The main specifications are as follows:

  • 6.72-inch screen (1,080 x 2,400 pixels, IPS LCD)
  • Mediatek Dimension 6020
  • 4GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • 50 MP / 2 MP (rear cameras)
  • 8 MP (selfie camera)
  • 5000 mAh battery (33 watts)
  • Android 13

VooC, not so great

This all looks pretty obvious. We notice that Oppo uses RAM sparingly. The loading speed is also a bit disappointing. Oppo is an expert at fast charging, but here it is damaging its own SuperVooC brand name by also using it for the 33-watt charging speed, which is slower than many Samsung devices and definitely not worthy of the fast charging moniker.

The 50MP main camera gets access to AI magic that includes resolution scaling, but we can’t infer much from that. The quality of the photos counts. However, we’re not so optimistic about the usefulness of the 2MP portrait camera.

With the Oppo A79 5G, Oppo is bringing a smartphone onto the market that looks quite good and stays under 300 euros. The question is whether the manufacturer is making the right compromises for this. We would have preferred to forego a 2MP sensor and opt for slightly faster charging and perhaps a bit more RAM. The new phone joins the lineup with two previously launched budget devices.
