The tech industry is betting on artificial intelligence, as we saw at CES 2024 held in Las Vegas. As we will more or less not be able to escape it, although it remains to be seen what benefits it brings in the face of its problems (which are not small without clear regulation, how far it can go and how) and if like many other global bets (see 3D, VR or Metaverse) go from marketing to fiasco without meeting expectations and without offering consumers the practical applications they promise.
Microsoft has invested a veritable million in OpenAI technologies (responsible for the ChatGPT chatbot) and wants to make it profitable. Last week, it launched a new show for the retail channel, which promises new “Copilot experiences”. It is a new set of generative data and artificial intelligence solutions designed to help retailers transform the journey consumers take from simply being interested in a product to actually making a purchase.
Using the Azure cloud platform, these solutions provide personalized recommendations, targeted advertising and a virtual trial environment. Microsoft promises increased sales, higher customer satisfaction and lower costs from these types of technologies. We don’t know if it will be that bad, but it sure is AI has a long history and application in commercial and business industries.
Copilot is the name of a new virtual assistant that, with the support of AI technologies, was created by Microsoft for use in its applications and services. And of course on Windows. There are many users who think so Microsoft has gone overboard with the benefits install it into the operating system.
The company, thanks to its dominance of the OEM channel, managed to get device and peripheral manufacturers to install a physical button for Copilot on PCs, the first change to Windows keyboards in 30 years. The measure sparked debate and criticism when it became known It’s too distracting.
And now comes another feature that also gets people talking. It’s about automatically opening Copilot in Windows 11 as a startup application. It is being tested in the latest version of the developer channel and will be finalized in the stable channel. At the moment it can be disabled in Settings > Personalization > Copilot, but we will see in the future.
Microsoft said so “Copilot would be an integral part of the Windows environment” with all that entails. Those of us who want a lightweight stable Windows system with maximum performance are not satisfied. The massive incorporation of artificial intelligence into Windows, which some find very intrusive, will not go down well with him. Its potential benefits at the end customer level have not yet been discovered.
