Former Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and former Vice President Guillermo Castillo were sworn in as members of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

For this reason, they will now enjoy immunity for four years.

The ceremony took place during a virtual session just days after the inauguration of President Bernardo Arevalo.

Prosecutors have taken numerous actions to disqualify the results of the last election, which Arévalo won, or to outlaw his political party, Movimiento Semilla.

These positions drew condemnation from the international community, which supported the democratically elected leader.

Giammattei thus follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, former President Jimmy Morales, who took over after the now-defunct International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) accused him of receiving nearly a million dollars in illegal campaign contributions. .
