For years, buying an Android phone has been associated with hopefully having several years of updates. Google Pixels have always been the exception, with seven years of system updates coming to Android, starting with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Manufacturers like Samsung are particularly lagging behind, with four years of system updates and five years of patches. Even if we remove Google from the equation with this data, the main reference in updates in recent years has been Samsung. And it will continue to be so, now with seven years of updates.

Samsung is changing its update policy

The company wants to be the first to catch up with Google in updates, although it has a customization layer with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The company’s flagship will receive seven years of support for operating system versions and another seven years for security patches.

It starts from Android 14 and should reach… Android21. A barbaric support that brings Samsung to the level of a rival that can be beat in terms of support: Apple. Samsung has always been the first company to deliver monthly security patches with improvements and bug fixes, ahead of even Google; Therefore, this couldn’t be better news for future buyers of the S24 Ultra.

The biggest challenge is keeping the phone working properly after seven years. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 12 GB RAM will help, but everything will depend on the load One UI has to withstand as the ROM improves.

Meanwhile, Android’s outlook isn’t great. Xiaomi recently changed its update policy to offer four years of Android updates and five years of security patches. This is something mainly reserved for high-end Xiaomi, with Redmi often left out.

The rest of the manufacturers are dancing between two to three years of updates in the best-case scenario; It’s a pretty weak number these days. It is worth noting that in the case of Samsung, seven years applies only to the S24 Ultra, the rest are satisfied with the previous support.
