On compatible Android phones, you can now search visually by drawing circles, independent of the app.
Starting today, Google is introducing “Circle to Search,” a new integrated search feature for Android devices. Regardless of the app, you can activate the feature with a gesture to get more information.
This sounds cryptic, but an example makes a lot clear. Suppose you see something on Instagram, for example a beautiful painting on the wall, you can use a gesture to open the new feature. The option to draw a circle will appear on the screen. Do this around the object you are interested in and you will get a search result based on the image.
The functionality is identical to Google Lens today, but thanks to Circle to Search, you don’t have to leave the app you’re working in. According to the search giant, everything should become more intuitive.
To start the feature, all you have to do is long-press the home button or the navigation bar at the bottom if you use gestures. Are there multiple things you want to look for in a photo? After a search result, you can delete the circle and specify the next object.
Circle to Search will be available worldwide starting January 31st. The first devices that can get started with the new function are the Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 devices.
Generative AI with Multisearch
In addition to Circle to Search, Google is also announcing a new feature: Multisearch. This allows you to search through both text and images and ask additional questions about the topic using generative AI. For example, do you see an event cycle three times on LinkedIn? You can then use Multisearch on Google to find out where the event is taking place and what it is about.
You can do the same thing around a store, dishes, or other things. It’s a step beyond what Google Lens can do today.
The Multisearch feature is currently only available in the US this week. It is not yet clear when the feature will be rolled out globally.
Multisearch does not yet have the brand new Gemini model that Google has introduced, at least for now. Google continues to continually tinker with its AI applications to improve them. There is therefore a chance that Gemini will be active as an AI heart when it is widely rolled out.
