“Quantum technologies are on the verge of revolutionizing the world of innovation and can change the rules of the security game, including modern warfare. Ensuring the ‘quantum readiness’ of the alliance is the goal of NATO’s first quantum strategy. In the preliminary publication, it was stated that the foreign ministers of NATO countries will meet on November 28. “On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, NATO will publish a summary of this strategy.”
The strategy outlines how quantum technologies can be applied to defense and security in areas such as sensing, imaging, precise positioning, navigation and synchronization, improving submarine detection and modernizing and protecting data transmission using quantum resistant cryptography.
“Many of these technologies are already used in the private sector and have become the subject of strategic competition. The NATO Quantum Strategy helps develop and guide NATO’s cooperation with industry to develop the transatlantic ecosystem of quantum technologies, and also prepares NATO for the ill-intentioned use of material, quantum technologies “to defend against its use,” he said.
Quantum technologies are one of the technological areas prioritized by NATO members due to their impact on defense and security. These include artificial intelligence, data and computing, autonomy, biotechnology and human development, hypersonic technologies, energy and mobility, new materials, next-generation communication networks and space.
Quantum technologies are already part of NATO’s innovation efforts. Six of the 44 companies selected to participate in NATO’s Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) program specialize in quantum technologies. Their innovations are expected to help advance next-generation cryptography, develop high-speed lasers to improve satellite communications, and use quantum-enhanced 3D imaging sensors in harsh underwater environments.
On November 28, 2023, foreign ministers of NATO member countries approved the first quantum strategy in the history of the Alliance, which should strengthen the cybersecurity of the bloc, Ukrinform reported.
