Samsung has made the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ official. The focus of this generation is clear: artificial intelligence. After thoroughly testing the S24 Ultra’s AI features, I immediately thought of one thing: “this all reminds me of the Google Pixel 8 Pro.”
Background rendering interface, interpreter mode, keyboard translations… Most of the functionality is taken from the Pixel ROM, although it has been refined and works even better in some cases. Now we know why: Samsung is the first Google Cloud partner to distribute Gemini Pro.
This means that the S24 family can benefit from Google models such as Image 2, the Gemini Nano language model and Google DeepMind technologies.
Let’s clarify What about Samsung or Google? Since this agreement between both companies is just the beginning, it is also included in the new Galaxy S24 family. Any other company that has an agreement with Google can take advantage of these functions.
Functions we already know from Google
We already knew some of the functions offered by the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, some through native Google integrations, some through applications available to all users on Android.
- Interpreter mode: The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has the ability to translate the voice input of a person speaking another language into text and voice in real time. It is a function that directly leverages Google Translate’s translator mode. Actually the interface is the same.
- Speech to text transcription– Particularly useful for interviews or recording lectures or lectures, the S24 Ultra can convert speech to text and distinguish multiple speakers. Does this function sound familiar to you? Instant Transcription took its first steps on Android with the Google Pixel 4 in 2019, but it’s pretty polished on this Samsung phone.
- Editor
magical Samsung photo: Productive editing by deleting objects and people, changing their size, changing elements of the photo… Samsung has based it on the Magic Editor of the Google Pixel 8 Pro, although it has improved it. It doesn’t depend on the photo hosted on Google Photos and works much faster.
- Productive Wallpapers: choose a word combination and create a wallpaper using Image, Google’s language model for creating photos.
- Keyboard translation: Google keyboard, one of Gboard’s most used functions, is real-time translation. This allows you to type in Spanish and have the text translated into any language. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra goes even further and thanks to Google’s language model, it can give us grammatical suggestions or suggestions about the tone of speech.
- Apartment to search: This is a feature released by the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but Google has confirmed that it will arrive on its Pixels.
These functions, although developed by Samsung, are facts we already know in Android. Good news? Nothing prevents the rest of the manufacturers integrate similar functions, but this requires an agreement with Google. Some manufacturers are still a long way from Google’s approach to software, so the not-so-positive news is that mass adoption is unlikely.
Samsung’s exclusive features
In addition to these functions, Samsung also has its own developments that work partly thanks to Google’s Gemini model.
- Call translation– Although Google technology is used, this feature is specific to Samsung. It’s integrated into the phone app itself, and there’s nothing like it on Google Phone at the moment.
- Converting notes to plain text: Leveraging some of Google’s artificial intelligence potential and the usefulness of the S-Pen, the Galaxy S24 can convert and format handwritten text as if we had written it on a keyboard. Additionally, you can create summaries, grammar corrections, and more.
- Android Auto: One of the most surprising points of the S24 Ultra concerns the integration of artificial intelligence into Android Auto. When we connect the phone to the car, we first encounter Samsung’s own interface, not the generic interface of Android Auto. You’ll automatically be able to summarize incoming messages, suggest replies, summarize several messages into one… an evolution of Android Auto that even the Pixels haven’t achieved so far.
- ProVisual Engine: Samsung wanted to rely a little more on artificial intelligence to increase its photography power.
Samsung surpasses Google thanks to Google
An interesting read about the integration of Google AI in One UI is how Samsung outperforms Google. Pixel 8 Pro was also sold with the claim that it increased the usefulness of artificial intelligence, but did not reach the level applied by Samsung. Besides the fact that Google has improved its own functions in terms of speed (which may be due to the huge difference between Google Tensor and Qualcomm) and user experience, it also has its own additions.
Samsung managed to stand out ahead of Google in the field of artificial intelligence. The processor also bears some of the responsibility
Google AI works better on the S24 Ultra than on the Pixel 8 Pro. It’s faster, in some cases, the model can be run locally and if we want to use tools like the editor, we don’t have to store data such as our photos in the Google backup.
There is some hope for the remaining companies. Those who want to partner with Google can technically access these models and implement them with the right hardware. Whether this will happen or not is the big question.
