Samsung has made the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ official. The focus of this generation is clear: artificial intelligence. After thoroughly testing the S24 Ultra’s AI features, I immediately thought of one thing: “this all reminds me of the Google Pixel 8 Pro.”
Background rendering interface, interpreter mode, keyboard translations… Most of the functionality is taken from the Pixel ROM, although it has been refined and works even better in some cases. Now we know why: Samsung is the first Google Cloud partner to distribute Gemini Pro.
This means that the S24 family can benefit from Google models such as Image 2, the Gemini Nano language model and Google DeepMind technologies.
Let’s clarify What about Samsung or Google? Since this agreement between both companies is just the beginning, it is also included in the new Galaxy S24 family. Any other company that has an agreement with Google can take advantage of these functions.
We already knew some of the functions offered by the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, some through native Google integrations, some through applications available to all users on Android.
These functions, although developed by Samsung, are facts we already know in Android. Good news? Nothing prevents the rest of the manufacturers integrate similar functions, but this requires an agreement with Google. Some manufacturers are still a long way from Google’s approach to software, so the not-so-positive news is that mass adoption is unlikely.
In addition to these functions, Samsung also has its own developments that work partly thanks to Google’s Gemini model.
An interesting read about the integration of Google AI in One UI is how Samsung outperforms Google. Pixel 8 Pro was also sold with the claim that it increased the usefulness of artificial intelligence, but did not reach the level applied by Samsung. Besides the fact that Google has improved its own functions in terms of speed (which may be due to the huge difference between Google Tensor and Qualcomm) and user experience, it also has its own additions.
Google AI works better on the S24 Ultra than on the Pixel 8 Pro. It’s faster, in some cases, the model can be run locally and if we want to use tools like the editor, we don’t have to store data such as our photos in the Google backup.
There is some hope for the remaining companies. Those who want to partner with Google can technically access these models and implement them with the right hardware. Whether this will happen or not is the big question.
