Microsoft is causing a stir with its latest patch for Windows Server 2022. Anyone who runs the operating system on a desktop will notice after installation that Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox no longer work. Other Chromium browsers such as Edge from Microsoft are also said to have problems.
Microsoft tells The Register it is aware of the flaws and is investigating them. However, there is nothing about known problems on the update website. KB5034129 was released on January 9th and fixes many security issues. So, in theory, it’s important to install the patch as quickly as possible. In practice, affected users will have to uninstall the update if they want to use the broken applications again.
The fact that a browser like Chrome stops working is not evidence of sufficient testing by Microsoft. This once again presents users and administrators with an unpleasant dilemma: ignore a patch that addresses known security issues, or run the risk of more annoying issues appearing after the patch.
