This operating system is most incompatible with Android and its applications. The creators are calling HarmonyOS NEXT “purebred Harmony” – because it is built on the Harmony core and uses specially written programs for this.

At today’s press conference, Yu Chengdong said that the HarmonyOS kernel is superior to the traditional kernel (presumably Linux) and is very suitable for use on a variety of devices in all scenarios. HarmonyOS is a real operating system: it is completely self-developed, from the programming language to the compiler.

Huawei revealed the structure of the operating system; it even has an integrated AI model (Pangu) powered by the MindSpore framework. Of course, there are development and programming environments, a compiler (Ark Compiler), programming languages ​​(ArkTS/Cangjie). The kernel is called HarmonyOS, which is the EROFS/HMDFS file system.

According to Huawei representatives, more than 200 applications are currently being developed for HarmonyOS NEXT. More than 60 development teams are participating in the game creation project, and more than 70 games are in development. A total of more than 5,000 applications are expected to arrive for HarmonyOS NEXT by the end of the year.

It must be said that HarmonyOS NEXT It was created primarily taking into account the Chinese market, where Huawei’s position is particularly strong. Considering the success of the flagships of the Mate 60 and Nova 12 series, the company’s partners prefer not to ignore Huawei’s complete rejection of Android and are actively involved in the development process. Analysts predict that by the end of the year, HarmonyOS will surpass iOS and become the second mobile operating system after Android in the country. HarmonyOS NEXT closed beta for Huawei Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro and Mate X5 is now live. The final version of the operating system is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2024.
