At a press conference held in the canton of Zurich, archaeologists presented a new find: a sturdy glove from the 14th century, discovered during excavations southeast of the Kyburg castle (Switzerland). Archaeologists discovered the artifact near the castle while exploring a medieval textile cellar that was destroyed by fire in the 14th century.
In addition to the gloves, more than 50 metal objects belonging to blacksmithing (hammer, tweezers, tongs, wrench, knife, knife) were found.
The glove is designed for the right hand. It consists of separate iron plates attached to each other in the form of scales and connected by side rivets. The individual parts of the glove were attached to the inside with leather or textile-based rivets sewn into the fabric.
Five gloves from the medieval period have been found so far in archaeological excavations in Switzerland, but none of them were this well preserved.
