Material You is the latest version of the visual language that Google has implemented into Android and its apps. It arrived with Android 12, but has continued to evolve since then with new features like the last two changes. They’re reinventing progress bars and sliders.

Get ready to see spaces or gaps in progress bars and noticeably thicker sliders since the last Material You docs in December 2023 have been adapted to provide a slight twist.

New sliders

Sliders are controls with which we can adjust a value by doing just that. sliding control. They’ve been around Android since time immemorial, and probably their best-known design is a simple line with a circle to set the value.

Latest version of Material You thickens sliders and are available in four styles: continuous, discrete, centered, and range selection. The big news, besides the thickness of the bar, is that the bar has been cut to include the slider, which is a line and not a circle.

As we drag while adjusting the value, we see the corresponding number, and if we have predefined constant values, they are marked with dots on the line.

Progress bars with end indicators

Something similar happens with progress bars, which remain quite similar except for two details: there’s a gap in their design, so it’s not a continuous bar. You can see exactly what this is in the animation below:

Also, it is added an indicator showing the end of the bar It has an end, as opposed to indefinite bars that fill up over and over again as progress is made.

These two changes are available for both the end indicator and the empty space on the bar for both linear and circular progress bar and now that these are part of the Material You specifications, we’ll have to get used to them whether we like it or not, because they’ll start making their way into Google and third-party apps.
