Astrobotic’s private Peregrine lander, recently launched to the Moon, burned up in Earth’s atmosphere over the South Pacific Ocean.

As reported by Ukrinform, New Atlas reported this.

The device entered the Earth’s atmosphere around 23:00 Kiev time on Thursday and burned up in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean.

Completion of the Peregrine mission was confirmed by NASA’s Space Communications Complex (CDSCC) in Canberra, Australia, which tracks the spacecraft and acts as a telemetry relay for the Astrobotic vehicle owner.

It was the CDSCC that recorded Peregrine’s sudden loss of signal.

It is stated that the Peregrine mission was intended to mark several historical events. This would be the first American mission to land on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972, and the first private lunar landing in history.

As Ukrinform reported, on Monday, January 8, United Launch Alliance launched the first Vulcan Centaur rocket into space. It will carry Astrobotic’s custom Peregrine lander to the Moon as part of the test flight.

A few hours after launch, it became known that the device encountered technical problems, specifically loss of power supply and later loss of fuel.

Development company Astrobotic later said Peregrine would burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.
