The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed the landing of the probe.
“According to telemetry data, we see that SLIM has landed. We are currently checking its status,” the agency said, adding that they will hold a press conference on Friday to provide updated information about the status of the landing module.
The Japanese probe was supposed to land within 100 meters of the target point on the rim of the Shioli Crater. If successful, Japan will become the fifth country to set foot on the moon, as the USSR, USA, China and India did before.
SLIM was launched alongside the X-ray Space Telescope XRISM in September 2023.
As reported, on December 25, the Japanese lunar landing module SLIM (Smart Lander for Exploring the Moon) entered lunar orbit before landing on the Earth’s satellite. On December 28, SLIM transmitted the first images of the Moon to Earth. The probe was scheduled to land on the Earth’s moon on January 20.
