US Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenannounced this Friday that the coming to power of the President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arevaloopens a new stage of regional migration cooperation between the United States, Mexico and Guatemala.

The head of American diplomacy stated this while receiving a delegation of the Mexican government led by the Chancellor in Washington. Alicia Barcenato restart migration negotiations that began late last year in response to record numbers of migrants arriving at the shared border.

Blinken stressed that a “very important development” had occurred since the two delegations last met on Dec. 27 in Mexico City, referring to Arevalo’s inauguration last weekend in Guatemala.

This opens up an important new area for migration cooperation between our three countries, and we will continue to work together more broadly to develop regional solutions to the historic challenge we face.

Blinken also stressed that the United States and Mexico have reached “an achievement great progress” on immigration issues over the past three weeks and announced that they would consider taking “additional steps” today.

The meeting renews negotiations from Dec. 27, when both delegations urgently met in Mexico City after the U.S. closed several border crossings due to the large number of migrants arriving.

Blinken is accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary and the man in charge of immigration policy, Alejandro Mayorkas; and White House security adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall.

Along with Mexico’s Foreign Minister, security chief Rosa Isela Rodriguez; Secretary of Defense Luis Cresencio Sandoval; from Marina Rafael Ojeda and from the National Institute of Migration Francisco Garduño.

The dialogue between the two countries is taking place in parallel with negotiations between Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress to approve new funds for the border and for Ukraine.

The conservative opposition made aid to Kyiv conditional on the restoration of the Joe Biden administration Title 42policies implemented by former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) directly expel people arriving at the Mexican border.

Last November, US immigration authorities apprehended more than 242,000 people for crossing the border without authorization, and although the data has not yet been made public, December is believed to have been a record number.

Human Rights Watch (HWR) this Friday called on Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to reject US attempts to restrict asylum and increase deportations.
