The Google ecosystem is known for its presence both among those with Android phones and where we find its powerful search engine while simply surfing the web. And Google has apps for just about everything, but We are very curious about our personal information to collect data..
If privacy is important to you and you like open source projectsWe found a list of apps that are completely free, a veritable mine of alternative apps to Google’s.
Awesome Privacy is a mine of free resources focused on privacy
It’s called ‘Awesome Privacy’ and it’s a long list of services and applications created on Github, thanks to the work of dozens of independent contributors. You will find applications with features similar to the applications we use in our daily lives. They do not collect our personal data.
The list includes computer programs for the computer, as well as many applications for Android devices that are worth considering and trying. Some of the most interesting are:
Two-factor authentication services: Instead of Google Authenticator, it offers applications such as Aegis, FreeOTPPlus and Authenticator Pro.
markers: Third-party ones sometimes contain ads and trackers that abuse permissions, so our recommendation is to use Koler.
File managers: Its bid to avoid ads and trackers goes through Amaze File Manager, Material Files, and Ghost Commander.
keyboards: Instead of classic Google Gboard or Swiftkey, they recommend FlorisBoard, AnySoftKeyboard, Indic Keyboard, Simple Keyboard, OpenBoard and OpenBoard upgrade.
starters: To avoid ads and trackers from Play Store launchers, Lawnchair recommends alternatives such as OpenLauncher, KISS, Olauncher, Posidon Launcher, Pie Launcher, Rootless Pixel Launcher, Bliss Launcher.
Cloud storage: The list recommends avoiding Google Drive, Drobox, and OneDrive due to their privacy policies, trackers, and even lack of encryption. Instead, Nextcloud offers alternatives such as Seafile, Proton Drive or Skiff Drive.
Cloud Pluginsfor example, Cryptomator, which allows you to encrypt your files so you can upload them to your favorite storage service, or Syncthing for file synchronization between devices.
to flirt: We recommend trying Alovoa instead of Badoo, Grindr or Lovoo, which may collect and sell personal information.
Share Files: Since WeTransfer and Sendanywhere do not have end-to-end encryption, you can use Localsend, Winden or Sharik instead.
App stores: There is a life beyond the Google Play Store and there are real gems in it. So you can try F-Droid, FossDroid, SkyDroid, Accrescent or Aurora Store.
This new app store is Open Source and does not require a user account: Accrescent
Health, Fitness and training. The list calls for not using the services of Google, Fitbit, Huawei, Xiaomi or companies that abuse data collection. You can use Fitotrack, training.lol or log28.
Games. The list warns about Nintendo’s data collection and recommends games like SuperTuxKart or Sonic Robo Blast 2 instead
home assistants. They recommend Home Assistant as an alternative to the mainstream Google Assistant Alexa, Siri or Cortana.
instant messaging. It has a classification regarding the degree of privacy where tools such as WhatsApp, Zoom or Skype are of little use. It recommends centralized Signal or decentralized Conversations instead.
Device tracking. None of the Google apps are recommended for finding our devices; It is recommended that you try Nextcloud Phonetrack, Find My Device or GPSlogger instead.
Email. Neither Google, Outlook nor Yahoo; You cannot use FairEmail and K9 clients with Forward Email, Tutanota, or Skiff.
Navigation. After recommending you to avoid famous ones like Google Maps, Waze, Sygics or Here WeGo, opt for Open Street Map (OSM), Qwant Maps or Organic Maps.
Playing multimedia content. Netflix, Prime Video, Plex or Spotify are excluded due to their audience and privacy policies, and BlackHole, mucke, Blade Player, Kodi, OSMC or Stremio are recommended instead.
Alternative operating systems to Androidlike mobian, GrapheneOS or LineageOS.
Password managersIt highlights the KeepassDX alternative for Android.
photo editingFor Android, you can use Pocket Paint, Scrambled Exif or ImagePipe.
Video platforms YouTube alternatives such as Peertube, LibreTube, NewPipe, LibreTube or Clipious.
translators– You can use Mozilla Translate or Libretranslate instead of Google Translate.
internet browsers. After recommending against Opera, Chrome or Bing, go for Mull, Brave, Vanadium, Privacy Browser, Tor Browser.
As you can see, the list is quite extensive and we have not included all their offerings, only the most interesting ones that are compatible with Android (or those that you can use from the web from a device). So it’s not all there, but it’s all there.
