US congratulates Mexico on positive results in curbing migration

United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken congratulated Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena. for “positive results” in reducing migrant arrivals at the common border, the State Department said in a statement.

Blinken delivered the message as two senior delegations from the United States and Mexico met in Washington on Friday to discuss the future of the region’s migration crisis.

He emphasized that “coordinated efforts with Mexico are producing positive results on the shared border,” according to the State Department note.

Increased deportations and immigration controls

Increased deportations and immigration enforcement in Mexico on bus and train routes heading to the United States have had a “positive impact,” he added.

The measures were agreed at an emergency meeting that both governments held on December 27 in Mexico City due to a record number of migrants crossing the border, estimated at more than 300,000 during that month.

The situation has led to a crisis between the US and Mexico, with the Joe Biden administration closing several border crossings that are key to bilateral trade for several days.

At Friday’s meeting, Blinken also expressed a desire to expand migration cooperation between the United States, Mexico and Guatemala after investments the new President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arevalo Leo.

In addition, the secretary of state pledged to work with other countries in the region to “address the root causes of migration and expand economic opportunity,” a demand that Mexico routinely brings to the table.

For its part, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday an agreement for Mexico and the United States to visit Panama’s Darien jungle, which thousands of migrants cross each year.

Likewise, they will seek to meet with the new Guatemalan government to “explore the best ways to strengthen” cooperation.

Blinken was accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary and the man in charge of immigration policy, Alejandro Mayorkas; and White House security adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall.

Along with Mexico’s Foreign Minister, security chief Rosa Isela Rodriguez; Secretary of Defense Luis Cresencio Sandoval; from Marina Rafael Ojeda; and from the National Institute of Migration Francisco Garduño.

Both committees will meet again in early February, but this time with a focus on fentanyl trafficking. (EFE)
