Google is testing voice input toolbar on Pixel tablet

Google’s keyboard app Gboard is working on a cool new voice typing feature for the Pixel tablet. They made some changes in the latest beta version of the app (13.7). Instead of a regular full keyboard they are trying something simpler and more optimized.

The main update is the sleek pill-shaped toolbar that appears when you launch the Google Assistant voice translator. Google claims that this UI allows you to “see more of the screen during voice input.”

This toolbar is designed to help you see more of the screen while typing by voice. It is small and efficient, showing only the main parameters without taking up too much space.

It allows you to quickly change settings, use voice commands, switch to emojis, and access the clipboard. You can also move it anywhere on the screen, even vertically; This is ideal for different tasks or just for your convenience.

What’s more, you’ll still get text suggestions near where you’re typing, making writing and editing easier. If you want a full keyboard, you’re just a tap away. This new toolbar is currently only available on a Pixel tablet running Android 14 QPR1. It is not yet available on other devices like the Pixel Fold.

We’re not sure if Google will bring this feature to more devices like Pixel phones, but it looks like a pretty useful feature. Google hinted at something similar for phones last year, so this new voice input method might not be just for tablets.

In related news: Google plans to remove 17 features from Google Assistant in the coming weeks. This decision aims to improve the “quality and reliability” of the service. However, it is worth noting that among these features that are being phased out, there are also some features that you can use regularly.
