Huawei announces the next generation of Harmony OS, the first version that is completely independent of Google, Android and Linux.

A short teaser was shared on YouTube HarmonyOS Next, the next generation of Harmony operating system that Huawei plans to launch to the general public in the fourth quarter. Harmony Next represents a big step for Huawei to stand on its own two feet: It is the first version that is completely independent of Android. Huawei hereby terminates all remaining connections to Google’s mobile operating system.

Harmony OS was born in 2019 and was originally intended as software for IoT devices. But due to trade restrictions imposed on the company that made it difficult to access Google applications, it was quickly encouraged to support software for all Huawei devices. Huawei wants to develop its own ecosystem with HarmonyOS as a counterpart to Android, but in order not to make the transition too abruptly, both operating systems worked well together.

Without Android and Linux

That changes with HarmonyOS Next. Huawei is said to have developed the kernel completely itself. Not only are the connections to Android and Google cut, Huawei’s operating system is also completely free of Linux. A first developer build will be released shortly to prepare apps for the big launch in the fourth quarter.

The chances of you ever getting your hands on a HarmonyOS Next device are slim. Huawei currently sells its smartphones, tablets and laptops exclusively in China and does not immediately show any intention of returning to the Belgian market. You have the best chances if you buy a smartwatch or sports watch from the brand, but then you are left with a smartwatch and a smartphone that don’t always speak the same language.

The announcement of HarmonyOS Next shows that Huawei is increasingly able to stand on its own two feet. The company surprised friends and foes alike last year with the announcement of the Mate 60 Pro, although the chip in the device ultimately did not turn out to be a “miracle chip”. After several difficult years, Huawei is gradually returning to normality.
