Meta allows EU users to separate their own services

From now on, EU users can unlink their meta accounts such as Facebook or Instagram. Meta is making this change in accordance with Google in response to the Digital Markets Act.

Meta announces that EU users can now disconnect their Instagram and Facebook accounts as well as other Meta services themselves in advance of the new Digital Markets Act (DMA). Earlier this month, Google made a similar announcement for its Google Services. As with Google, the split at Meta will impact certain services such as Facebook Marketplace and Facebook Gaming. EU users will receive a disconnection notification soon.

Shutdown of own services

Meta anticipates the new DMA and allows users to self-segregate their Meta accounts. This means that EU users can continue to use the Meta Services, but their data will not be automatically shared with other services. Meta explains why services are linked on its help page. The main reasons are ad targeting, personalizing content recommendations, and news sharing.

An important caveat to this change is that the separation will impact Facebook Marketplace and Facebook Gaming. This causes certain functions to stop working. For example, buyers and sellers must communicate via email if the Facebook account is not linked to the marketplace, or Facebook gaming fans will be limited to just one player.

Google showed it

The story is strikingly similar to that of Google. The company announced earlier this month that users would be able to disconnect their Google services, which also brought some consequences to the functionality of certain Google services.

The DMA comes into force on March 6th. EU users of Meta will receive a notification informing them of the change in the coming weeks.
