Mexicans abducted by Houthis not subject to ‘mistreatment or violence’: SRE

The Mexican crew of the Galaxy Leader, which was kidnapped by Yemen’s Houthi rebels for two months, are “healthy,” the Foreign Office (SRE) said.

The statement assured that “conditions on board the ship on which they are being held are adequate.”

Mexico’s ambassadors to Saudi Arabia and Iran maintained “constant communication with authorities and interlocutors of the Houthi leadership, and held numerous meetings requesting the release of the two Mexican crew members.”

According to the government, this facilitated contact “between them and their families” and it was “confirmed” that they were not subject to any “mistreatment or violence.”

Thus, the Mexican ambassador to Iran had a telephone conversation with fellow citizens who said they were being treated “adequately,” and the honorary consul of Mexico in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, paid a visit to check their conditions.

The Houthis seized the vessel, operated by Japanese company Nippon Yusen and designed to transport vehicles, on November 20 in the Red Sea, saying it was a retaliation measure in response to Israel’s “atrocities against the Palestinian people” in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank” in its operations against courts that have any relations with Israel.

However, Israeli authorities then stressed that it was not an Israeli vessel – as it flies a Bahamian flag – and called the hijacking a “serious incident with global implications”, attributing the incident to “Iranian terrorism”.
